One source of truth

Operational, donation, campaign and financial data now sit in one analytics environment, giving leadership a single view of the organization.

The story in short

Where they started

Donation, financial and program data sat in separate tools, and every report was put together by hand.

What we built

One Microsoft Fabric lakehouse, with Power BI dashboards, an executive view and a data agent on top.

Where they are now

Leaders answer their own questions about giving and spending, and decisions no longer wait on a report.

The people they serve

Behind every program is a decision: where the next dollar goes, which campaign to run, what to tell the board. Those calls are easier when the numbers are in one place.

About Morning Star Center

Morning Star Center is a nonprofit that works with vulnerable children, families and communities across Africa.

Its programs cover education, healthcare and maternity, child rescue and orphan care, and community outreach.

The challenge

Too many tools, and no single view of the money.

Morning Star’s leaders needed to see giving, spending and impact together. The data existed, but nobody could see all of it at once.

01

Data in too many tools

Operational, donation and financial data was spread across tools that didn’t talk to each other.

02

No single view of the money

Leadership had no consolidated view of the organization’s finances.

03

Reports built by hand

Campaigns, donors and impact were hard to track, and slow manual reporting held decisions back.

“
Our data lived in too many places. Donations, finances and programs each told part of the story, and we had no single view of how the whole organization was doing.”
José Kabeya, Founder and Executive Director, Morning Star Center
The route

One lakehouse, a few clear dashboards, and a way to just ask.

We brought the data together first, then built the views leadership asked for on top of it.

01 · Listen

The questions leaders needed answered

We began with the questions leaders ask most: how revenue is pacing, how long cash will last, and how donations are being spent on each program. Then we connected BetterUnite, Stripe and NetSuite, plus programs data from Excel in SharePoint.

02 · Connect

One lakehouse

Morning Star’s data comes together in a single lakehouse on Microsoft Fabric.

03 · Show

Dashboards for every level

Power BI dashboards for donations and financials, plus an executive dashboard for leadership.

04 · Ask

Leaders answer their own questions

A data agent lets staff ask questions in plain language and get answers from the same trusted data.

The executive dashboard: donations, financials and programs side by side.

What's the Outcome

Executive dashboard

The view leadership checks first.

Financial Health dashboard

Income and spending in one view.

Donations dashboard

Giving by campaign, donor and channel.

Data Agent

Questions in plain language, answered from the same data.

What changed

Decisions no longer wait on a spreadsheet.

Leadership can now see donations, finances and programs side by side: how revenue is pacing against the annual goal, how long cash will last, and how many people programs reach. When a question comes up, they ask the data agent in plain language instead of waiting for a report.

“
Now we can see giving, spending and impact in one place. Our team can ask a question in plain language and get an answer from the same trusted data, so we spend our time deciding how to help more children and families.”
José Kabeya, Founder and Executive Director, Morning Star Center
●What's next

The foundation is built to grow. Morning Star can add more data sources, dashboards, KPIs and advanced analytics as the organization grows.
